WhiteHouse counsel Don McGahn threatened to resign and warned that firing Mueller
would have catastrophic effects.

Don McGahn already is facing scrutiny on his involvement in firing Comey.

Trump tried to argue that Mueller had 3 conflicts of interest that would disqualify him:

  • Had a fees dispute at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, VA.
  • Impartiality from previous work at a law firm that represented Jared Kushner.
  • Already interviewed to return as FBI Director before becoming Special Counsel.

Trump’s personal lawyer, Marc E. Kasowitz, tried to dig up a conflict-of-interest case
against Mueller and news later leaked that Mueller’s prosecutors donated to Democrats.

Trump supporters believe that Mueller assembled a team of Democrats to oust Trump.

Another option that Trump and his team considered was to dismiss Deputy Attorney
General Rod Rosenstein and elevate Rachel Bland to oversee the Mueller investigation.
